How the CFEF Tax Credit Works

And why Utah Residents take it very seriously.

When you contribute to CFEF, you receive a tax credit equal to your donation amount, effectively lowering your state tax bill. Utah’s tax rate for both individuals and businesses is 4.65% of your adjusted gross income. Individuals and companies are able to donate their full state tax liability. For example:

  • If husband and wife file their taxes jointly, and their combined adjusted gross income was $120,000, their state tax liability would be $5,580. They could then donate $$5,580 to Children First Education Fund and receive a $5,580 tax credit against their Utah state taxes.
  • If a Utah based company had an adjusted gross revenue of $3 million, their state tax liability would be $139,500. The company could then donate $139,500, and receive a $139,500 tax credit.

Unlike standard charitable deductions, which only reduce taxable income and provide a partial benefit, this dollar-for-dollar tax credit ensures that your entire donation directly benefits both the children and your financial planning.

Win-Win: Giving Back Without Financial Strain

Since your donation is essentially refunded through the tax credit, you can make a significant impact on children’s education at no net cost to you. This allows you to direct your tax dollars toward something meaningful—helping children access the education they need to succeed.

Strengthening Communities Through Educational Equity

Beyond the financial benefits, donating to CFEF fosters a stronger, more inclusive society. Education plays a critical role in shaping future leaders, innovators, and community members. When children with disabilities receive the education they need, they are better prepared to contribute to society in meaningful ways.

Supporting CFEF ensures that:

  • Children reach their full potential, leading to greater career opportunities and independence.
  • Families experience relief and empowerment, knowing their children are receiving the best education possible.
  • Communities benefit from an educated, diverse workforce, fostering economic growth and social stability.

By redirecting tax dollars toward education, donors are investing in long-term societal improvements, ensuring that all children, regardless of ability, have a chance to succeed.

Personal Stories: The Real Impact of Your Donation

Here are a few real-life examples of how donations have made a difference:

Emma’s Story: Overcoming Learning Barriers

Emma, an 8-year-old with autism, struggled in her public school setting. The large class sizes and lack of individualized attention made learning frustrating. Thanks to a CFEF scholarship, Emma’s parents were able to enroll her in a specialized school that focuses on children with autism. With a personalized curriculum and expert support, Emma is now thriving, making significant progress in both academics and social skills.

Jacob’s Journey: A Future Filled with Promise

Jacob, a high school sophomore with dyslexia, faced years of difficulty keeping up with his peers. Traditional teaching methods left him feeling discouraged and behind. A CFEF-supported private school introduced him to adaptive learning technologies and specialized instruction, helping him gain confidence and excel in his studies. Today, Jacob is preparing for college with aspirations of becoming an engineer.

A Parent’s Gratitude: Giving Hope to Families

“As parents, we felt helpless watching our child struggle every day. The CFEF scholarship allowed us to find the right educational fit for our son. Now, he loves going to school, and we see a future for him that once seemed impossible. Thank you to all the donors who made this possible.” – A Grateful Parent
